How to Make Cannabis-Infused Gummy Bears

Some of the most popular cannabis edibles out there are weed gummy bears. This is because of the simplicity of the recipe and how quickly they can be made.

If you’ve ever wondered how to make cannabis edibles, but don’t know where to start, you’ve come to the right place. This article is going to cover every aspect of making weed gummy bears.

This recipe is going to require around 40 – 55 minutes.

Gummy bears spread our artistically on a white surface. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, and white.

What You’re Going to Need

Before we get into the ingredients and directions, we’re going to need a few things:

Organic Refined Coconut Oil

We use refined organic coconut oil when we make our infusion. That is because it does not have any distinct coconut taste or aroma, making it a good cooking medium. Here’s a link to the refined coconut oil that we use.

If you don’t have cannabis-infused coconut oil, we have a comprehensive guide to making it here. We also have a comprehensive guide in our cannabis cookbook, along with over 130 other edible recipes, you can learn more about our cookbook here!

Equipment

  • Stove
  • Cooking Pot
  • Whisk
  • Gummy Bear Moulds
  • Dropper
  • Freezer
  • Infusion Machine (optional)

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. 1Prep

Turn your stove on low heat. In a pot, add water, the cannabis-infused coconut oil, and the sunflower/soy lecithin.

  2. 2Mix

Continue stirring the mixture until it has a consistent texture and the coconut oil has completely melted. Now, add in the flavoured gelatin and the unflavoured gelatin while continuing to stir throughout this process.

  3. 3Control Temperature

Whisk extensively on low heat for 10-15 minutes until the gelatine is completely dissolved. Make sure it does not come to a boil. But, you need to make sure that all the ingredients are thoroughly combined. (Don't stop stirring this mixture for the entire 15 minutes)

  4. 4Fill Moulds

While leaving the pot on the element, start filling up the gummy bear moulds with a dropper (a dropper is a mini turkey baster that comes with most gummy bear moulds). Make sure to move quickly. If your liquid starts to separate, it's because the mixture has started to cool. It's critical that you move fast otherwise the oil may separate in the pot. You need to continue whisking throughout the pouring process otherwise the mixture may start to harden and stop binding. (The secret to making great infused gummy bears is pouring the mixture into the moulds as fast as possible.)

  5. 5Cool Gummy Bears

Put the gummy bear moulds into the freezer for 20-25 minutes. (Pro tip: lift the mould 2 inches off the table and drop it. This will let the mixture fill any air pockets.)

  6. 6Enjoy

    Bon Appetite!

Recipe notes

Optional: add a 3/4 tsp of citric acid into the mixture, use lemonade instead of water, and once the gummies come out of the freezer coat them in sugar. If you're using potent cannabis oil, this should help with the taste. Store in the refrigerator for best results.

Potency Guide

The strength of gummy bears will depend on the potency of your cannabis-infused coconut oil. It’s also important to remember that gummy bear moulds are all different shapes and sizes so it is going to be difficult to accurately find your potency. Luckily, we have a calculator here to help you find your potency per serving.

Potency Guide to Cannabis-Infused Gummy Bears

When it comes to the potency of your homemade edibles, it’s hard to determine just how potent they really are. We have created a dosage calculator to help estimate the potency of the homemade weed gummy bears. To get an accurate measurement, you will need to know the potency of the cannabis-infused coconut oil first. You can find the dosage calculator for the coconut oil at the bottom of that recipe – click here to find that calculator.

Once you know the potency of your cannabis-infused coconut oil, you can input it into this dosage calculator below. Keep in mind, this is just a rough estimate. Also if you make an error in the calculation at the start, it will carry through until the end.

Pop at teaspoon of your oil into a glass of hot tea or coffee and consume to see how potent your oil is.

It will be quite a challenge to test the potency of your coconut oil if you've already made it. We have a guide here to making infused coconut oil, and if you use the dosage calculator near the bottom it should help you estimate.

The recipie says makes 12 gummies?? I doubled the amounts used so i could make about 24. I used the exact moulds suggest (3.5ml) and made about 200 gummies?? Where on earth have you got makes 12 from? Seriously need to edit this recipie to give correct values.

Hi Chloe, we never said that this recipe makes 12 gummies. I think you've mistaken servings for gummies. If you followed the recipe, you would get 12 servings of around 8 gummy bears.

I'm using cannabis-infused coconut oil according to your recipe and at the end the oil was separating from the gelatin mix. I used the solid coconut oil in my preparation. The last of the gummies were almost all just the cannabis oil :).

Made way too many gummy’s, therefore they were very weak. I filled my 200 1ml gummy molds in no time and had a ton left over. Everything worked fine just made too many weak gummy’s.

I'm guessing if you use the lecithin as an emulsifier, you wouldn't get the separation you mentioned while stirring over heat?

If you used sugar free, use the 8.3 gram box instead of the 85 gram box. Most of the weight in regular box is sugar, not gelatin, as demonstrated by the fact that the sugar free box is 1 10th the weight, but makes the same ammount. Which means in a regular box of gelatin there's about 8 grams of gelatin and the rest is sugar. So I'd you added an extra 85 grams of just gelatin, I wonder you got so many! Hope this helps!

In reference to the multiple questions about the coconut oil separating, can you offer advice other than “what oil did you use?” Like what coconut oils to and not to use. Also can you answer the amount of gummies it makes for both 1ml and 2ml molds. Or maybe even one or the other so we can do the math for our own sizes.

Can I use extra flavored jello if I dont have unflavored gelatin, and if so, how much? My city is under a shelter in place and this is a great way to pass some time!!

    2. Nami Replying to steve

I made these and they turned out great. I used a raw organic coconut oil from Walmart (the cheapest I could find). And I didn't even use the Soy lecithin. The only thing I would change is using a fruit juice instead of water because the weed taste was just not the best, or even using a bigger pack of jello flavour.

          1. Liam Replying to Jackie

They should be refrigerated to preserve potency, but if they actually molded, I can only think of 2 ways that could happen-a) you sealed the jar while still above room temp, causing condensation inside or b)the herb you used had some mold in it. Sadly it's probably the latter bc while the humid environment of a) is perfect to grow mold, there still had to be spores to get it started. Either from the jar, airborne, or your starting material
