How to Make Cannabis-Infused Gummy Bears

Some of the most popular cannabis edibles out there are weed gummy bears. This is because of the simplicity of the recipe and how quickly they can be made.

If you’ve ever wondered how to make cannabis edibles, but don’t know where to start, you’ve come to the right place. This article is going to cover every aspect of making weed gummy bears.

This recipe is going to require around 40 – 55 minutes.

Gummy bears spread our artistically on a white surface. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, and white.

What You’re Going to Need

Before we get into the ingredients and directions, we’re going to need a few things:

Organic Refined Coconut Oil

We use refined organic coconut oil when we make our infusion. That is because it does not have any distinct coconut taste or aroma, making it a good cooking medium. Here’s a link to the refined coconut oil that we use.

If you don’t have cannabis-infused coconut oil, we have a comprehensive guide to making it here. We also have a comprehensive guide in our cannabis cookbook, along with over 130 other edible recipes, you can learn more about our cookbook here!

Equipment

  • Stove
  • Cooking Pot
  • Whisk
  • Gummy Bear Moulds
  • Dropper
  • Freezer
  • Infusion Machine (optional)

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. 1Prep

Turn your stove on low heat. In a pot, add water, the cannabis-infused coconut oil, and the sunflower/soy lecithin.

  2. 2Mix

Continue stirring the mixture until it has a consistent texture and the coconut oil has completely melted. Now, add in the flavoured gelatin and the unflavoured gelatin while continuing to stir throughout this process.

  3. 3Control Temperature

Whisk extensively on low heat for 10-15 minutes until the gelatine is completely dissolved. Make sure it does not come to a boil. But, you need to make sure that all the ingredients are thoroughly combined. (Don't stop stirring this mixture for the entire 15 minutes)

  4. 4Fill Moulds

While leaving the pot on the element, start filling up the gummy bear moulds with a dropper (a dropper is a mini turkey baster that comes with most gummy bear moulds). Make sure to move quickly. If your liquid starts to separate, it's because the mixture has started to cool. It's critical that you move fast otherwise the oil may separate in the pot. You need to continue whisking throughout the pouring process otherwise the mixture may start to harden and stop binding. (The secret to making great infused gummy bears is pouring the mixture into the moulds as fast as possible.)

  5. 5Cool Gummy Bears

Put the gummy bear moulds into the freezer for 20-25 minutes. (Pro tip: lift the mould 2 inches off the table and drop it. This will let the mixture fill any air pockets.)

  6. 6Enjoy

    Bon Appetite!

Recipe notes

Optional: add a 3/4 tsp of citric acid into the mixture, use lemonade instead of water, and once the gummies come out of the freezer coat them in sugar. If you're using potent cannabis oil, this should help with the taste. Store in the refrigerator for best results.

Potency Guide

The strength of gummy bears will depend on the potency of your cannabis-infused coconut oil. It’s also important to remember that gummy bear moulds are all different shapes and sizes so it is going to be difficult to accurately find your potency. Luckily, we have a calculator here to help you find your potency per serving.

Potency Guide to Cannabis-Infused Gummy Bears

When it comes to the potency of your homemade edibles, it’s hard to determine just how potent they really are. We have created a dosage calculator to help estimate the potency of the homemade weed gummy bears. To get an accurate measurement, you will need to know the potency of the cannabis-infused coconut oil first. You can find the dosage calculator for the coconut oil at the bottom of that recipe – click here to find that calculator.

Once you know the potency of your cannabis-infused coconut oil, you can input it into this dosage calculator below. Keep in mind, this is just a rough estimate. Also if you make an error in the calculation at the start, it will carry through until the end.

Hi. Mine seem to go moldy quickly. I’ve added citric acid and potassium sorbate to latest batch. Has anyone tried putting them in a dehydrator to increase shelf life? If so what temperature and how long ?

I made this and my gummies tasted super herby. Can I use juice in place of water to try to.cover some of the herb flavor?

Hi Michelle, try this to help with the taste: add a 3/4 tsp of citric acid into the mixture, use lemonade instead of water, and once the gummies come out of the freezer coat them in sugar. Hope this helps! 🙂

What’s the shelf life on gummy edibles? I typically freeze premade edibles but those are cookies, brownies, baked goods, etc. I’m looking to big batch gummies but want them to last 1-2 months. Any info on perishability, storing tips, etc. would be welcomed.

Hi Craig, The shelf life on gummies is not as good as some other edibles out there. I store mine in a container in the fridge but I try to eat them within 1 week.

When the gummies set, the edges were a different colour/texture than the areas that set properly. It’s like the coconut oil separated and ended up with a greasy gummy texture. Any tips on avoiding this next time?

My molds are 1inch and there are 75 in total. Will they all fit with a full batch? If not what do I do with the mixture of it doesn’t fit? Can I reheat and if so how?

I had 160 molds of 1ml gummies and I had enough left over for another 20-30 I estimate. Put the extra in ice cube trays

Hi Angie, Make sure that you're continuously stirring for the 10 minutes that the gummies are on the heat. Then, store them in either the fridge or freezer. If you leave them out they will soften up.

Hi, Can you please send me the link to the exact coconut oil you used? If it is the same oil as the one we have linked above, I suspect it's because it was not mixed enough. However, if you're using coconut oil that is liquid regardless of temperature you could run into some separation issues.

Ryan, I think you need to update your recipe from saying that the soy lecithin is optional to emphasizing that it is absolutely required. Oil separates from water, that is fact. Whisking the coconut oil, water, and gelatin will make it come together temporarily but sitting in the fridge it will separate while in the mold. The soy lecithin acts as an emulsifier for the water and oil because the molecular structure supports both oil and water. Please update your recipe and notify the commenters whose bears separated.

    1. Ryan Mogk Replying to Ron Parent

Hi Ron, when making gummies you do use one pack of jello. If you don't have unflavoured gelatin you can buy it for relatively cheap from a bulk barn or other wholesale ingredient store.

I followed your recipe for gummy bears to the tee. My gummy bears separated. 50/50 Cannabis infused coconut oil on top and the recipe Jell-O and gelatin on the bottom. Stir continuously for 15 minutes on low heat no boil. I did spray my gummy bear mold with butter. Where did I go wrong? Oh by the way they did work.

do you use flavoured JELLO mix(85 mg box) or flavoured GELATIN. I heard Jello mix is different than GELATIN. I have unflavoured GELATIN but where do you get flavoured GELATIN from? I'm a little confused with the part of the recipe that says: “Plain unflavored gelatine 1 pack of flavoured gelatin/JELLO MIX(85g)”. Thanks.

  13. Greg Sawyer

So I use a dosage calculator which is great for my edibles. Everything infused has to be converted into ounces. Would that imclude the water or just the gelatin? I used 4 ounces of thc coconut oil and 4 ounces of water as called for. Not sure how much the water dilutes. So do I convert the water to ounces and add to total amount to be infused? Thank you and thanks for having the recipes available.
