How to Make Cannabis-Infused Gummy Bears

Some of the most popular cannabis edibles out there are weed gummy bears. This is because of the simplicity of the recipe and how quickly they can be made.

If you’ve ever wondered how to make cannabis edibles, but don’t know where to start, you’ve come to the right place. This article is going to cover every aspect of making weed gummy bears.

This recipe is going to require around 40 – 55 minutes.

Gummy bears spread our artistically on a white surface. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, and white.

What You’re Going to Need

Before we get into the ingredients and directions, we’re going to need a few things:

Organic Refined Coconut Oil

We use refined organic coconut oil when we make our infusion. That is because it does not have any distinct coconut taste or aroma, making it a good cooking medium. Here’s a link to the refined coconut oil that we use.

If you don’t have cannabis-infused coconut oil, we have a comprehensive guide to making it here. We also have a comprehensive guide in our cannabis cookbook, along with over 130 other edible recipes, you can learn more about our cookbook here!

Equipment

  • Stove
  • Cooking Pot
  • Whisk
  • Gummy Bear Moulds
  • Dropper
  • Freezer
  • Infusion Machine (optional)

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. 1Prep

Turn your stove on low heat. In a pot, add water, the cannabis-infused coconut oil, and the sunflower/soy lecithin.

  2. 2Mix

Continue stirring the mixture until it has a consistent texture and the coconut oil has completely melted. Now, add in the flavoured gelatin and the unflavoured gelatin while continuing to stir throughout this process.

  3. 3Control Temperature

Whisk extensively on low heat for 10-15 minutes until the gelatine is completely dissolved. Make sure it does not come to a boil. But, you need to make sure that all the ingredients are thoroughly combined. (Don't stop stirring this mixture for the entire 15 minutes)

  4. 4Fill Moulds

While leaving the pot on the element, start filling up the gummy bear moulds with a dropper (a dropper is a mini turkey baster that comes with most gummy bear moulds). Make sure to move quickly. If your liquid starts to separate, it's because the mixture has started to cool. It's critical that you move fast otherwise the oil may separate in the pot. You need to continue whisking throughout the pouring process otherwise the mixture may start to harden and stop binding. (The secret to making great infused gummy bears is pouring the mixture into the moulds as fast as possible.)

  5. 5Cool Gummy Bears

Put the gummy bear moulds into the freezer for 20-25 minutes. (Pro tip: lift the mould 2 inches off the table and drop it. This will let the mixture fill any air pockets.)

  6. 6Enjoy

    Bon Appetite!

Recipe notes

Optional: add a 3/4 tsp of citric acid into the mixture, use lemonade instead of water, and once the gummies come out of the freezer coat them in sugar. If you're using potent cannabis oil, this should help with the taste. Store in the refrigerator for best results.

Potency Guide

The strength of gummy bears will depend on the potency of your cannabis-infused coconut oil. It’s also important to remember that gummy bear moulds are all different shapes and sizes so it is going to be difficult to accurately find your potency. Luckily, we have a calculator here to help you find your potency per serving.

Potency Guide to Cannabis-Infused Gummy Bears

When it comes to the potency of your homemade edibles, it’s hard to determine just how potent they really are. We have created a dosage calculator to help estimate the potency of the homemade weed gummy bears. To get an accurate measurement, you will need to know the potency of the cannabis-infused coconut oil first. You can find the dosage calculator for the coconut oil at the bottom of that recipe – click here to find that calculator.

Once you know the potency of your cannabis-infused coconut oil, you can input it into this dosage calculator below. Keep in mind, this is just a rough estimate. Also if you make an error in the calculation at the start, it will carry through until the end.

I stupidly used a sugar free jello-o box thinking it was the same thing as regular jello-o, just without the sugar. After freezing they look like cannaoil with red specks mixed in. Sugar free jello is 8.5 grams. Do I really need to use 10 boxes of sugar free jello to make this recipe properly?

We are having extreme problems with separation issues in our gummies and they are melting when you take one too. We’re using Coconut cannabis oil it is around half a cup we are mixing that with 1 tablespoon unflavored gelatin and 42.5 g of flavored gelatin along with two tablets of sunflower Lethasin. A quarter cup of cold water and then we let that simmer for about 10 minutes. And then we can pour that into our moles put them in the fridge raider and that’s where our separation issue is. They are also melting very easily out of the fridge. Any Input would be greatly appreciated.

I love this recipe!! I've used it several times and each time the gummies came out amazing!! No separation problems at all for me. Do you have the conversion for a large box of jello at 111.8g?

Hi Sharon, we're happy you enjoyed the recipe! The easiest way to find out how much of each ingredient you will need if you're using 111.8g of gelatin is by multiplying the amount of every other ingredient by 1.3. I reached this number by dividing 111 by 85 since the original recipe calls for one 85-gram packet. So here is how much you will need of each ingredient: 154 ml Cannabis-Infused Coconut Oil (Refined coconut oil, solid at room temperature) 154 ml of Cold Water 111 Grams Packet of Flavoured Gelatine *One Jell-o Pack 38 ml Plain Unflavoured Gelatine (26 Grams) 3.12 ml Sunflower / Soy Lecithin (liquid lecithin) (Optional) Hope this helps! 🙂

Thank you Ryan, I had the math, but was unsure about conversion!! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Do you have a page I can follow for recipes?

If I wanted to stretch the recipe out for a high potency infused coconut oil, could i triple the water and gelatin portions or will that screw up the finished product?

Hi Andrew, this will work but be prepared to have a ton of gummies.

Hi Ryan, I followed your recipes for both the canna infused coconut oil and these gummies. The flavor is good but they didn’t set up fully. I used liquid sunflower lecthicin And both the flavored jello brand gelatin and for the unflavored gelatin I used the Jel brand (vegan version). I even left them in the freezer longer to just try and get them to freeze solid and they won’t do that either. They’re the consistency of like a spread or dip... but they’re molded in little gummy molds and I waste as little as possible... thoughts? I’m Super bummed.

Hi there, Great simple recipe. Thank you! But you say they are better preserved in the refrigerator. So how do I pass them along to friends? Do they also have to keep them in the fridge? What do you suggest? Thank you, Marsha

I just tried making these. Followed the Measurements & directions exactly. I never stopped whisking but Before the 15 mins was up it was already too Thick & gummy to use the plastic dropper (came w the molds), tried using a larger metal dropper, same issue. Ended up Just pouring from the pot. Tastes awesome, but I wasted a lot of mixture and my bears are a hot mess lol. Please help...any ideas what I did wrong??? Thanks!

Hi Lauren, you may have heated the mixture too hot. If it starts to thicken too much, this is because the water is starting to evaporate. You can add some more water while mixing to make it easier to work with when you're putting it into the moulds. Hope this helps 🙂

Hi, I just made these and they didn't come out jelly like, they got way too hard. What could i have done wrong? First time i made them they were fine. This time, too hard. Any suggestions?

Hi Jeanette, the gummies can sometimes come out hard if you leave them in the freezer too long. If you allow them to sit at room temperature, they should return to a gummy-like texture and firmness.

Hey! I've tried this recipe twice and both times worked great. Just one thing – after the freeser, mine come out like a solid colour instead of translucent like your images. I didn't use lecithin, could it be that? Or something else perhaps?

I followed this coconut oil recipe exactly but added 1/2 tsp of citric acid to the gelatin mix for sourness and preservation. The final mixture (ready to go into the gummy molds) was really thick and difficult to pull into the dropper. It took so long to fill the molds, that by the time I got to the last 12 gummies or so, the remaining mixture in the pot had separated. I had expected about 90 3.5 ml gummies but only got 75. Would it be okay to pour the whole mixture into one warm pyrex baking dish, cool the gummies in the refrigerator, and then cut the rectangular slab into 85 squares with a pizza cutter? Will the gummies stick to the pyrex dish? Seems like this would be much faster and avoid separation? Thanks for your advice.

Hi Ian, I would recommend pouring the mixture onto parchment paper. Then, when you cut them into cubes make sure to weigh the pieces individually to calculate potency. Since not every piece is the same weight, the potency calculation is going to be a bit more complex. Here's how you could do it: Find the total mg of THC for the entire recipe. Next, find the total weight of all of the gummies. Then, weigh each cube individually. This is how you would calculate it: Individual cube weight ÷ Total weight of all gummies = %total of weight Next, %total of weight X total mg of THC for entire recipe = mg of THC in the gummy cube Hope this helps! 🙂

I just finished infusing my coconut oil and I realized I only have about 50 grams of flavored jello, but I have all of the other ingredients. Can i just use 50 grams of jello with the recipe as is or will that be disastrous?

Great recipe, super easy. I used my already liquid oil with lecithin, I was worried but they turned out awesome, no separation. Thanks for posting recipe.
