How to Make Cannabis-Infused Gummy Bears

Some of the most popular cannabis edibles out there are weed gummy bears. This is because of the simplicity of the recipe and how quickly they can be made.

If you’ve ever wondered how to make cannabis edibles, but don’t know where to start, you’ve come to the right place. This article is going to cover every aspect of making weed gummy bears.

This recipe is going to require around 40 – 55 minutes.

Gummy bears spread our artistically on a white surface. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, and white.

What You’re Going to Need

Before we get into the ingredients and directions, we’re going to need a few things:

Organic Refined Coconut Oil

We use refined organic coconut oil when we make our infusion. That is because it does not have any distinct coconut taste or aroma, making it a good cooking medium. Here’s a link to the refined coconut oil that we use.

If you don’t have cannabis-infused coconut oil, we have a comprehensive guide to making it here. We also have a comprehensive guide in our cannabis cookbook, along with over 130 other edible recipes, you can learn more about our cookbook here!

Equipment

  • Stove
  • Cooking Pot
  • Whisk
  • Gummy Bear Moulds
  • Dropper
  • Freezer
  • Infusion Machine (optional)

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. 1Prep

Turn your stove on low heat. In a pot, add water, the cannabis-infused coconut oil, and the sunflower/soy lecithin.

  2. 2Mix

Continue stirring the mixture until it has a consistent texture and the coconut oil has completely melted. Now, add in the flavoured gelatin and the unflavoured gelatin while continuing to stir throughout this process.

  3. 3Control Temperature

Whisk extensively on low heat for 10-15 minutes until the gelatine is completely dissolved. Make sure it does not come to a boil. But, you need to make sure that all the ingredients are thoroughly combined. (Don't stop stirring this mixture for the entire 15 minutes)

  4. 4Fill Moulds

While leaving the pot on the element, start filling up the gummy bear moulds with a dropper (a dropper is a mini turkey baster that comes with most gummy bear moulds). Make sure to move quickly. If your liquid starts to separate, it's because the mixture has started to cool. It's critical that you move fast otherwise the oil may separate in the pot. You need to continue whisking throughout the pouring process otherwise the mixture may start to harden and stop binding. (The secret to making great infused gummy bears is pouring the mixture into the moulds as fast as possible.)

  5. 5Cool Gummy Bears

Put the gummy bear moulds into the freezer for 20-25 minutes. (Pro tip: lift the mould 2 inches off the table and drop it. This will let the mixture fill any air pockets.)

  6. 6Enjoy

    Bon Appetite!

Recipe notes

Optional: add a 3/4 tsp of citric acid into the mixture, use lemonade instead of water, and once the gummies come out of the freezer coat them in sugar. If you're using potent cannabis oil, this should help with the taste. Store in the refrigerator for best results.

Potency Guide

The strength of gummy bears will depend on the potency of your cannabis-infused coconut oil. It’s also important to remember that gummy bear moulds are all different shapes and sizes so it is going to be difficult to accurately find your potency. Luckily, we have a calculator here to help you find your potency per serving.

Potency Guide to Cannabis-Infused Gummy Bears

When it comes to the potency of your homemade edibles, it’s hard to determine just how potent they really are. We have created a dosage calculator to help estimate the potency of the homemade weed gummy bears. To get an accurate measurement, you will need to know the potency of the cannabis-infused coconut oil first. You can find the dosage calculator for the coconut oil at the bottom of that recipe – click here to find that calculator.

Once you know the potency of your cannabis-infused coconut oil, you can input it into this dosage calculator below. Keep in mind, this is just a rough estimate. Also if you make an error in the calculation at the start, it will carry through until the end.

This recipe worked okay for me, but I think 85 grams might be too much Jell-O mix to use. I ended up with a ton of relatively weak gummies, and I feel like I need to eat an obscene amount of gelatin, sugar and food coloring compared to the amount of marijuana I'm consuming. Initially I used only 17 grams of Jell-O because I didn't thoroughly read the directions (I read “one box” and used one 17gram box). Despite following all other directions correctly, including powdered sunflower lecithin and gelatin as directed, the coconut oil and gelatin totally separated. Not surprising, I messed up. So I tried again as directed — after combining the coconut oil, water, and lecithin thoroughly, I added the 2tbsp of gelatin, and then began adding the 85grams of Jell-O — after 51 grams (three of the 17gram boxes), the mix was like pasty cement and extremely grainy looking. That was probably a sufficient amount of Jell-O, maybe even a dozen grams too much. But I kept adding the rest of the Jell-O until I had 85 grams, as directed, and it was horrible: a big clumpy mess, way too dry to combine and stir. I left it to cook on low heat to see if it would dissolve, but it didn't. Eventually I added another ~1/2 cup of water, and it did melt and combine, but it was extremely thick. After cutting them, they are an extremely thick and sticky consistency, and the volume is way too much for the amount of THC that's in them (though obviously exacerbated by the extra half cup of water I added). I need to eat ~3 or 4 big gummies for any effect, and they are really sweet. Anyway, your mileage may vary, and maybe I just messed it up with the extra water, mayve the recipe is perfect as-is. I haven't tried it with less Jell-O myself, but I think it'd be better.

Anyone used cannabis distillate? If so, would you want infuse coconut oil with it first so it would not separate when mixing with water?

Hi, I only found soy lecithin granules, how would I incorporate the granules into the recipe? Would I just heat the jello mixture and allow it to dissolve or would it have to be a separate process to dissolve it? Thanks

What can I use on place of coconut oil? I’m highly allergic to it but I want to make gummies

Hello, I've made this recipe 3 times now, the first 2 times I didn't use lecithin and they came out ok, not strong but we are working on that. Now the 3rd time that we made them we used the liquid lecithin and we placed them in the freezer like we did the first 2 times but this time when we took them out they looked like the color of the oil. So we took one out and the color of oil stuff on top was hard like a crust and then a lovely looking gummy under it and also tasted much better. We did also put extra flavor drops in it as well the 3rd time too. The hard like crust stuff didn't taste like anything at all but the gummies tased awesome this time. (still waiting to see how strong they are going to be) Has this ever happened to you or anyone else that might be reading this? Does anyone know what would cause this to happen?

Hey for all the people with separation issues. I have done 6 batches so far 3 failed (oil separated from gummies when setting) the last 3 where perfect. Bring the water and oil to a very slight boil right before adding the gelatin, it should boil up slightly when adding, if it doesn’t crank the heat fast. Then stir like crazy and set the heat so it just starts to boil again, then keep stirring with the mix just barely below boiling. It should get thick and sticky, if it stays watery then u messed up and it will separate. It only takes about 5 minutes of stirring and it gets thick very fast so don’t wait the full 15 minutes or you will have one giant gummy. So to sum it up, if your water is to cold or your mixture gets to cold it will separate.

Thank you... I'll bet that is what happened. is there any thing to try and salvage a bad batch?

I'm confused by the written versus video recipes. The video has no oil, but the same quantity of powders and water. Psychoactive effect aside, doesn't adding the oil affect the finished product?

I made a batch this morning and had no idea how to do it so just winged it. My joint weighed .7 grams and I figured it held about 7 doses so I took 7 grams of weed and soaked it in 2/3 cup vodka for about an hour. I used the vodka to mix with the gelatin. I made 70 gummy squares and they came out just right.

Pop a teaspoon of your oil into a glass of hot tea or coffee and consume to see how potent your oil is.

This will be my first time and your recipe seems solid. But I have a couple of questions. What is the total volume this recipe produces when finished. Does the gelatin blooming increase the volume? Because there’s a total of 1 cup liquid to start. I ask so I can figure out what to mold it in; thinking either mini ice cube tray(s) or just an 8” square pan (I’d cut squares after) Also, I’ve seen similar recipes that call for 1/4 cup infused oil instead of 1/2, everything else is the same. Do you know why this might be (assume the thc % is doubled in the 1/4 cup for consistency). Thanks

Do you think it would work if I use all unflavored gelatin and pure fruit juice instead of water? Maybe add a coconut sugar or honey to sweeten?

The first time I tried the recipe they were too soft. Trying a new batch. Can I place the finished gummies in a dehydrator to make them a little chewier? If so, do I toss in sugar first or after. Thanks!

Hi Carrie, I'm not sure about the dehydrator. I'd worry that the dehydrator could melt all of the gummies. We keep the gummies firm by leaving them in the freezer until we consume.
