How to Make Cannabis-Infused Gummy Bears

Some of the most popular cannabis edibles out there are weed gummy bears. This is because of the simplicity of the recipe and how quickly they can be made.

If you’ve ever wondered how to make cannabis edibles, but don’t know where to start, you’ve come to the right place. This article is going to cover every aspect of making weed gummy bears.

This recipe is going to require around 40 – 55 minutes.

Gummy bears spread our artistically on a white surface. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, and white.

What You’re Going to Need

Before we get into the ingredients and directions, we’re going to need a few things:

Organic Refined Coconut Oil

We use refined organic coconut oil when we make our infusion. That is because it does not have any distinct coconut taste or aroma, making it a good cooking medium. Here’s a link to the refined coconut oil that we use.

If you don’t have cannabis-infused coconut oil, we have a comprehensive guide to making it here. We also have a comprehensive guide in our cannabis cookbook, along with over 130 other edible recipes, you can learn more about our cookbook here!

Equipment

  • Stove
  • Cooking Pot
  • Whisk
  • Gummy Bear Moulds
  • Dropper
  • Freezer
  • Infusion Machine (optional)

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. 1Prep

Turn your stove on low heat. In a pot, add water, the cannabis-infused coconut oil, and the sunflower/soy lecithin.

  2. 2Mix

Continue stirring the mixture until it has a consistent texture and the coconut oil has completely melted. Now, add in the flavoured gelatin and the unflavoured gelatin while continuing to stir throughout this process.

  3. 3Control Temperature

Whisk extensively on low heat for 10-15 minutes until the gelatine is completely dissolved. Make sure it does not come to a boil. But, you need to make sure that all the ingredients are thoroughly combined. (Don't stop stirring this mixture for the entire 15 minutes)

  4. 4Fill Moulds

While leaving the pot on the element, start filling up the gummy bear moulds with a dropper (a dropper is a mini turkey baster that comes with most gummy bear moulds). Make sure to move quickly. If your liquid starts to separate, it's because the mixture has started to cool. It's critical that you move fast otherwise the oil may separate in the pot. You need to continue whisking throughout the pouring process otherwise the mixture may start to harden and stop binding. (The secret to making great infused gummy bears is pouring the mixture into the moulds as fast as possible.)

  5. 5Cool Gummy Bears

Put the gummy bear moulds into the freezer for 20-25 minutes. (Pro tip: lift the mould 2 inches off the table and drop it. This will let the mixture fill any air pockets.)

  6. 6Enjoy

    Bon Appetite!

Recipe notes

Optional: add a 3/4 tsp of citric acid into the mixture, use lemonade instead of water, and once the gummies come out of the freezer coat them in sugar. If you're using potent cannabis oil, this should help with the taste. Store in the refrigerator for best results.

Potency Guide

The strength of gummy bears will depend on the potency of your cannabis-infused coconut oil. It’s also important to remember that gummy bear moulds are all different shapes and sizes so it is going to be difficult to accurately find your potency. Luckily, we have a calculator here to help you find your potency per serving.

Potency Guide to Cannabis-Infused Gummy Bears

When it comes to the potency of your homemade edibles, it’s hard to determine just how potent they really are. We have created a dosage calculator to help estimate the potency of the homemade weed gummy bears. To get an accurate measurement, you will need to know the potency of the cannabis-infused coconut oil first. You can find the dosage calculator for the coconut oil at the bottom of that recipe – click here to find that calculator.

Once you know the potency of your cannabis-infused coconut oil, you can input it into this dosage calculator below. Keep in mind, this is just a rough estimate. Also if you make an error in the calculation at the start, it will carry through until the end.

I use cooking oil and infused mines with weed. Instead of coconut, I don’t like the taste of coconut

I was wondering why mines be so oily? Never thought it was the cooking spray I spray the molds with? So you can put them in the molds without spraying.. thanks

Can anyone help... When were making the gummy's, the coconut oil seams to be separating and making the backs of the bears go white? The oil rises to the top of the mould. What are we doing wrong ? Thanks

I don't have enough molds to hold all the liquid I made... can I reheat this and fill the molds later?

Hi Jen! Yes, you can! I've seen that some people buy a pack of regular gummy bears & melt them down. Then they infuse them once they're melted. As you reheat the gummies, you're probably going to end up evaporating some more water. That being said, you might want to add some water or juice when you melt them down again. That will also make them easier to work with as your putting them into the moulds.

I did not bloom my gelatin by mistake. My gummies did not set well and separated, how can I remedy this without losing/wasting my product?

Like some other posts, I had the oil separate out on cooling, so there is a separate layer of coconut hardened oil on the jello/gelatine. I used Whole Foods 365 Organic refined, expeller pressed coconut oil. The only difference I see compared to your oil is the smoke temp, where the Nutiva is 400, while Whole Foods is 375. That doesn't seem like a big difference. I filled 176 (1.5ml) molds, then put them in the freezer. They looked well mixed at that time, but separated into the 2 layers while in the freezer. What am I doing wrong??

Would the mixture be okay if being consistently stirred if the left overs were left on the heat until the first batch cooled. We had extra gelatin left over on our first back but I was wondering if we could fill the first set of molds and then let the first batch set and keep the mixture on the heat until we could pipe it in the molds

Followed your recipe and the gummy bears turned out great, although I don’t know the potency they are perfect for us. I think the secret in making them is to constantly stir them for 10-15 minutes and then the consistency is perfect. I have tiny moulds that hold 1.5ml and it made 232, I’d like to figure out how to stretch it to 265 so all the moulds are full. Set them up in the fridge overnight. I sprayed the moulds with cooking oil and I won’t do that again as they are kinda greasy, even after putting them on paper towels. So simple to make.

Hi Jenn, Glad you liked the recipe! The secret to making them is (you guessed it) to not stop stirring them the entire time they're on the element. Without spraying the moulds the gummy bears will pop out with no issues. If you're having trouble getting them out of the moulds it's probably because they are not done cooling yet. 15 minutes in the freezer is usually all it takes.

Ryan Awesome recipe. No separation issues at all. Made like 10 oz of gummies tho. Some didn’t want to come out of molds. Left in fridge over-night. Question: they seem a little ‘slime you. Is there a way to avoid that and make them more like store bought? Thanx

Hi David, Glad you enjoyed the recipe! What we do to stop them from being sticky is to roll the gummies in confectioner's sugar. Them being sticky will work to your advantage because they will be 100% coated. For the gummies not coming out of the moulds easily, we've never had that problem. Are you using silicone moulds? If you aren't these are the way to go. You can push the moulds inside out and they pop right out. Also, try putting the gummies in the freezer for just 20-30 minutes. This is what we do and they turn out great. Hope this helps!
